We, the undersigned, are appalled by the recent announcement of the Flemish government regarding M HKA - Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp. Following the decision to cancel the museum’s new building, the minister of culture decided to abolish M HKA’s status as a national museum, passing its collection and museum function to S.M.A.K in Ghent. We find it astonishing that this decision was made with no consultation with the museum, its stakeholders, museum experts or artists. We question, fundamentally, the minister’s assertion that having two contemporary art museums in one region is an ‘incoherent policy’. M HKA and its collections are both locally rooted and internationally connected, built over four decades. De-localising a collection is to undo it.

We, the undersigned, ask the Flemish government to reverse its decision to regress the Antwerp contemporary art museum M HKA into an art centre. This would be a devastating blow to both Antwerp, the Flemish and the international contemporary art ecology.
